The 4 Most Common Sign Maintenance Issues

business signage

The signage outside of your business is critical to attracting new customers, providing a wonderful first impression and quickly conveying important information. However, if you don’t spend time and money maintaining your signage, the investment you made can quickly go down the drain. The good news is that many of the most common sign maintenance issues are easy to fix, as long as you don’t drag your feet on getting them repaired!

Improper Lighting

Most business signs have either LED or fluorescent bulbs. While LED lights have long lifespans and can be operated regularly without much maintenance, fluorescent lamps have a much shorter lifespan. Whenever you replace one fluorescent lightbulb, we suggest replacing all of the bulbs in your sign at once. This prevents you from incurring additional service trip charges when another bulb burns out. If you are curious to learn more about other lighting options for your sign, like LED bulbs, please reach out to us today.

Faulty Tubes

If you have a neon sign, one of the most prevalent sign maintenance issues is a faulty tube. If you have a broken tube, it’s important to hire a professional for the repair. Amateurs often end up breaking other tubes in the process of swapping one out. Neon tubes are very sensitive and very close together. A single jolt can break multiple tubes in an instant.

Cracks and External Damage

This type of sign maintenance issue is particularly common after severe weather events or harsh weather conditions. Cracks and external damage require maintenance as quickly as possible. If you leave internal sign elements exposed (especially outdoors), a great deal of damage can occur in a short amount of time. If any part of the interior of your sign is visible, you should give East West Sign Group a call for an assessment as soon as you can.

Lighting Failures

Some of the most common causes of lighting failures include faulty LED power supplies and fluorescent ballasts. How do you know that you have a ballast problem? If your light grows dimmer, blinks at a rapid pace or stops working suddenly, these are all signs that you have a ballast problem. In warm weather, some ballast with overheating controls will automatically shut off whenever things get too hot. Once the temperature cools, the ballasts will turn back on. Before you ditch your current ballast, make sure this isn’t the case.
