Signs should be aesthetically pleasing, but they also need to be functional. A beautiful sign that communicates no information is useless for the business trying to advertise. There are three key components behind the art and science of sign design: location, the design itself and the viewer.
Location, Location, Location
Since signs are a single part of a larger landscape, it’s critical to think about where they are going to be placed and in what context they will exist. Signs that are posted on the premises of a business will be further from the road than signs designed to inform motorists of your location. If you are posting highway signs, remember that drivers travel about 80 feet per second if they are driving 55 miles per hour. The larger a sign is, and the more readable it is from a distance, the longer that drivers will have to read and digest the sign.
When designing your sign, there are many different aspects of reading comprehension you should consider. If you have a familiar logo, set of colors or phrase, like a McDonald’s logo or the phrase “coffee shop,” readers will be able to understand your sign in a shorter amount of time. The contrast on your sign is also vital to comprehension. Make sure that there is sufficient contrast between graphics, words and the background.
Without the right adjustments for your target audience, your sign won’t get the point across. Over 65% of adults currently wear glasses, contacts or both. In addition, over 25% of drivers are expected to be over the age of 65 in 2025. Adapting your signage to those with slower reaction times and poor eyesight is essential. In addition, signs should be within a narrow range of sight from the road so that viewers don’t need to turn their heads to view them.
