It seems like just yesterday we were all scrambling to reinvent our wayfinding systems to keep visitors as safe as possible amid the peak of the pandemic. As things are beginning to return back to normal on that front, now marks the perfect time to audit your wayfinding signage situation once again. Here are three signs it is time to upgrade your wayfinding signs.
Low Access to Key Information
There is no question that a well optimized wayfinding system is a great step toward creating a pleasant experience for your guests. However, it’s more serious than that. An effective wayfinding system should also seamlessly relay critical information to your visitors, allowing no room for error or too many visitor judgement calls. Is your space equipped with signage clear enough to direct customers and employees out of the building in the event of an emergency? If not, it’s time for our team to get to work and deliver the fix in the interest of everyone’s safety who enters your place of business.
High Traffic Areas
If you find that your place of business gets particularly congested at a few specific locations, it may be time to take a closer look at your wayfinding system. After all, no one needs the added stress of navigating a brand-new location for the first time when it is packed with others doing the exact same thing. What is the reason for the congestion? Are first time visitors unsure where they are headed? Is it simply a case of a key part of your space swelling up with activity? Even in that case, multidirectional wayfinding signage may be enough to keep the flow of traffic organized and your customers headed to their destination.
ADA Compliance
The Americans with Disabilities Act outlines several steps businesses must take in order to provide reasonable signage alternatives for those who cannot rely on visual cues. We posted a blog back in 2021 outlining the specifics of ADA compliant signage, but here are the main things to consider when auditing the current state of the permanent signage that makes up your wayfinding system:
- Braille alt text
- High contrast lettering
- Signage placed between 40” and 60” from the floor
